Surg Tech Program's Amazing Success
Chris Gray, Ph.D.

Founding President, Erie County Community College

If you've ever considered a career in the healthcare sector but are unsure where to start, becoming a Surgical Technologist might be your perfect fit. This role is crucial within the medical field, offering both a dynamic work environment and the satisfaction of directly contributing to patient care, and our program at EC3 is fantastic!

Surgical technology involves assisting in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. Surgical Technologists, often referred to as "scrub techs," are responsible for preparing the operating room, arranging equipment, and ensuring a sterile environment as well as assisting during procedures by passing instruments and supplies and sometimes handling specimens for laboratory analysis.

At EC3, we've seen firsthand the impact and importance of this role. Our program is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in this demanding yet rewarding profession. Our graduates are integral to the success of surgical teams, ensuring that operations run smoothly and efficiently. Their tasks include preparing operating rooms, assisting in procedures, maintaining sterility, and providing patient care.

The journey to becoming a Surgical Technologist starts with education, and we invite you to make EC3 your first step. Our program typically takes one to two years to complete and covers essential topics such as anatomy, microbiology, and surgical procedures.

Upon completion of the program, students are ready to sit for the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) exam, a comprehensive assessment that evaluates the knowledge and skills required to perform as a Surgical Technologist. The exam covers several key areas, including preoperative care, intraoperative care, and postoperative care. At EC3, our curriculum is tailored to ensure our students are well-prepared for this exam. We offer extensive resources, including study guides, practice tests, and access to experienced instructors who provide invaluable guidance and support. At EC3, we prepare our students well for the NCCT exam, and this year, 100% of our students were successful! We had a 100% graduation rate, and all of our students received job placements at UPMC-Hamot. WOW!

Our graduates' success speaks volumes about the quality of our program. We consistently see high pass rates on certification exams and positive feedback from employers who praise our graduates' preparedness and professionalism. Regular study sessions, practice exams, and collaborative study groups are just a few of the strategies we encourage our students to adopt to ensure their success. And their success speaks for itself.

It's important to note that the demand for Surgical Technologists is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in this field is projected to increase by 9% by 2030, faster than the national average for all occupations. This growth is driven by advances in medical technology and an aging population, which will require more surgical procedures. At EC3, we're proud to play a part in meeting this demand by training the next generation of skilled Surgical Technologists.

A career as a Surgical Technologist is not only fulfilling but also offers a clear pathway to success within the healthcare industry. With the right education and dedication, you can become a vital member of the surgical team, playing a crucial role in patient care and surgical outcomes. If you're ready to embark on this exciting journey with us, please get in touch. Your future in surgical technology awaits, and EC3 is here to help you every step of the way.
