In The Shadow of the April Moon: Preparing for the 2024 Total Eclipse

March 5 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

A total solar eclipse will occur at 3:16 pm, April 8, 2024, in Erie, PA, an event we won’t observe again until 2099. On that day, the people of Erie and the surrounding area will see the sun disappear, leaving a ghostly glow in the daytime sky that will last for three minutes and 42 seconds. The “Line of Totality” is the area over which the total eclipse can be viewed. Erie is the largest city in Pennsylvania to bear witness to the total eclipse.

David Horne, Ph.D., is a physicist and astronomer at Gannon University, Erie Campus, and an active physics and astronomy researcher and educator, holding undergraduate and graduate degrees in both physics and astrophysics. An experienced amateur astronomical observer before embarking on his professional career, Horne has nearly 35 years of experience in observing the sky and has traveled to observe eclipses in both Europe and the United States.

The lecture will be held at EC3 Erie West from 12:30-1:30 PM.
