Meet Our President

Founding President, Chris Gray, Ph.D.

Hello! I'm Chris Gray, Founding President of Erie County Community College, and I'm so thrilled to have you at EC3! Being part of this College means everything to me because we are working to build something different! We're changing the way higher education is done, and we're changing Erie County – together. Every day, our faculty and staff change the trajectory of students' lives.

It is important to me that what we build here is, first and foremost, accessible, and affordable to all students. This community college was founded to provide access to those who thought college might not be possible; it was built to help those who want to start a new career do so affordably; it was designed for students. Hurdles belong at track and field competitions, not in higher education.

Before my time at EC3, I spent twenty years teaching speech and theatre in higher education; I hold a master's degree in theatre and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Foundations with a research area in Theatre Assessment. Way back when, I began my educational career as a community college student, so I have been where you are. I am a graduate of and a firm believer in the community college mission.

My professional focus has been strengthening regional ecosystems by building workforces because I believe that connecting local business and industry needs students interested in high-paid, in-demand careers to enhance our entire community. I believe in the power of collaboration between community colleges, businesses, and civic partners to shape local economic development.

I also serve as a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission and am certified in Baldridge systems. Outside the President's office, I contribute to my community through service to local Chambers of Commerce, church involvement, and other civic organizations. I recently served on Governor Shapiro's higher education committee of the education and workforce group and I currently serve on the advisory board for Community Cornerstone Project, on the board of the Pennsylvania Commission of Community Colleges, and on the Joint State Government Commission on Greater Father Involvement.

This all sounds fancy but in reality, I'm not that different than most of our students; I'm just a little further along the academic journey. But, I'll use this place and this College to advocate for you and every resident of Erie County; we all deserve a chance to sit at the table and education opens those doors!

I didn't believe that I was college material until someone convinced me to take a chance, and I want to assure Erie County residents that there is a place for you here. You belong here, and we will be better for having you! Once you join our ranks, we want you to leave EC3 and land a job that leads to family-sustaining wages. We want you to achieve your career dreams and educational goals.

Our main priority is you and providing you with everything you need to succeed. Your success is our success. We can't wait to meet you! Our community, your college.
