Getting Ready for Erie Gives

Chris Gray, Ph.D.

Founding President, Erie County Community College

Emily Dickinson spoke of the impact that comes from that "certain slant of light" in reference to winter; I notice the changing of the light as July gives way to August, and the days grow a bit shorter as summer begins to give way to autumn.  Despite the sometimes oppressive heat during the dog days of summer, in August particularly, something has shifted. Back-to-school season is upon us, and the vibe is changing.

The energy is just different somehow, and every year, the Erie County community comes together to support the work of area nonprofit organizations through the Erie Gives initiative in August. Originally founded by The Erie Community Foundation and supported by community partners, this day of giving highlights our community's commitment to collective philanthropy. EC3 is proud to participate for the third time this year.

Since opening our doors in July 2021, EC3 has grown tremendously, and we could not have done this without the unwavering support of our community — of you. We thrive and accomplish our mission because you believe in us and help make our work possible. Your support has brought us this far, and we hope you'll continue to stand with us once again this year.

During the course of the past three years, we've celebrated our first and second graduating classes, continued to forge local partnerships with area manufacturers and academic institutions, and opened new EC3 campuses across Erie County. We've also continued to expand our degree and certificate programs to meet community and student needs. Our commitment to growth and adaptation is driven by our dedication to serving our county and community, and we are still really just beginning.

Once again, we need your help to continue this progress.  Recently, I shared my story of how a $40 flat tire could mean the difference between success and failure for many students. It's a story that is as true now as it ever was — maybe more so.  I've long said that it's often not academic barriers that hinder student success; it's life's unpredictable and unpleasant surprises and challenges. What for most of us would be just minor inconveniences can wreak absolute havoc on students who are investing all they have in their education. This randomness is heartbreaking because it underscores how vulnerable our students can be.

I try to remind myself and others that our students need more than just academic support sometimes.  I also believe that no $40 flat tire should ever be able to disrupt students working to achieve their goals. With your help, we can create new and existing support systems to assist students facing these challenges.

New this year, Erie Gives Day is twenty-four hours of giving. Donors can contribute online, by check, through a stock gift, or by using the Required Minimum Distribution from an IRA. Additionally, along with the Bonus Bucks from pooled corporate sponsorship dollars, Country Fair Charity Pumps will contribute to all participating nonprofits on this day of giving.

By donating to EC3 during Erie Gives, you are showing your support for our community members as they strive to change their lives and our county. It was through community will and advocacy that EC3 was born initially, and your ongoing support will enable us to expand and foster continued student success. Together, we've established EC3 in Erie, and together, we will continue our work of service to the county as we work to broaden our reach.

Please consider how you can help us during Erie Gives. We are who we are because of you and your support. Your donation could assist a student with everything from obtaining school supplies to purchasing a stethoscope for their course. Donations can be made here beginning on Tuesday, August 13, and we are deeply grateful for your contribution. Your donation literally changes students' lives and betters our community. We cannot do this work without you.

For more information on donating by check, please use this form. Thank you so much for your continued support!

Our community: your college.
