Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Description

This micro credential program will provide students with comprehensive training in the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process, one of the most widely used and versatile welding techniques. This program focuses on the safe and effective use of SMAW/stick welding to join ferrous and non-ferrous metals in a variety of industrial applications. Students will learn safe equipment operation, electrode selection and handling, setting appropriate weld parameters, and perform high-quality welds in various positions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate safe welding practices.
  • Demonstrate how to set up SMAW welding machines, including adjusting amperage, voltage, and selecting electrode type.
  • Weld in various positions using SMAW techniques.
  • Prepare materials for welding by cleaning, aligning, and sizing joint gaps to ensure strong welds.
  • Troubleshoot and correct welding defects.
  • Evaluate and inspect welds for quality.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in weld joints.
